Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined INR 12 lakh (approximately $14,500) after his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans.

The game, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, saw Mumbai Indians fail to chase down a target of 197, losing the match by 36 runs.

This penalty, the first of the season for a captain, falls under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations.

Pandya’s fine follows a similar incident earlier in the 2024 IPL season, where he missed the season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) due to a slow over-rate offence from the previous campaign.

During the press conference, Pandya expressed his acceptance of the rules, stating that while the penalty was unfortunate, it was out of his control.

This is the first instance in IPL 2025 where a captain has received a fine for slow over-rates. Prior to the season, the IPL governing council had introduced a demerit points system for such violations, with the possibility of suspension points being carried over for up to 36 months.

Pandya had previously commented on the slow over-rate penalties, acknowledging the consequences and deferring the decision on its continuation to the governing authorities.

Currently, Mumbai Indians sit in ninth place on the points table with no points from their opening matches.

They are scheduled to face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on March 31.
