Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Union Budget 2025 speech that the government would give identity cards and make it easier for one crore gig workers to register on the e-Shram platform. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), these employees—including those connected to Zomato and Blinkit—will also be eligible for healthcare benefits.

Gig Workers: Who Are They?

According to the 2020 Code on Social Security, a gig worker is any individual who works or receives compensation outside of the conventional employer-employee relationship; these individuals usually operate in on-demand occupations such as freelance labour, ride-hailing, or food delivery.

A family’s annual insurance coverage for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation is Rs 5 lakh with PM-JAY. Notably, in each State or Union Territory, pre-existing conditions are covered from day one. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, registered e-Shram members would be eligible to utilise the insurance coverage.

The e-Shram Platform: What Is It? And How To Register?

The Indian government launched the e-Shram platform with the goal of giving unorganised sector workers social protection. It keeps an extensive database of workers and streamlines access to government welfare programs.

To sign up, you need:

– The Adhaar Number

– Aadhaar-connected mobile number

– The IFSC code for the Savings Bank account number

It is important to note that a worker may register using biometric authentication at the closest Common Service Centre (CSC) or State Seva Kendra (SSK) if they do not have an Aadhaar-linked mobile phone number.

To apply for an e-Shram Card online, follow these steps:

Step 1: Go to the e-Shram portal’s self-registration page at www.eshram.gov.in.

Step 2: Click on “Send OTP” after entering your cell phone number that is connected to your Aadhaar account.

Step 3: Provide your Aadhaar number, enter the OTP that was delivered to your mobile device, and accept the terms and conditions.

Step 4: Check the personal information on the screen, then fill in the designated fields with your address, educational background, nominee information, and bank information. Then finally click ‘Submit’.

Remember to choose the appropriate skill name, business type, and work type. After finishing, your e-Shram card will be sent to you.
